What your score means
0-7 — No clinically significant insomnia. Your reported sleep difficulty is in the range seen in people without insomnia.
8-14 — Subthreshold insomnia. Mild difficulty. Sleep timing, light exposure and caffeine habits are worth reviewing.
15-21 — Moderate clinical insomnia. A level at which many clinicians would consider cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia.
22-28 — Severe clinical insomnia. Marked sleep difficulty. Please discuss this with a doctor or sleep specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Can this test diagnose insomnia?
No. The ISI measures how severe your reported sleep difficulty is. A diagnosis needs a clinician, who may also look for other causes such as sleep apnea.
How often should I retake this?
The questions cover the last two weeks. Repeating it every two to four weeks is a reasonable way to track whether changes are helping.
What if I snore heavily or feel very sleepy in the day?
Those point towards obstructive sleep apnea rather than insomnia alone. The STOP-BANG screen on this site covers apnea risk.
